Shorebirds of the Northeast

Join Audubon for a 4-week workshop that will focus on the identification skills of the shorebirds found throughout the Northeast in the late summer. While most shore birding occurs at our coastal habitats, many species can be found in smaller numbers at inland locations as well. Along with identification tips and practice, we’ll discuss how you can support and participate in Audubon’s work in protecting these birds and conserving the places they need.

The four sessions will take place every Wednesday from July 22 thru August 12.

  • Week 1 (July 22) Introduction to Shorebirds: Learn to categorize the individuals of a flock into Plovers, Sandpipers, and other groupings.
  • Week 2 (July 29) Peeps and the Other Sandpipers: Decode these frustratingly similar species with a mix of plumage, behaviors, and structural characteristics.
  • Week 3 (August 5) Plovers and Larger Shorebirds: After examining a few easily confusing pairs, we’ll take a look at species with unique bill shapes, behaviors, and habitat choices.
  • Week 4 (August 12) Other Birds You’ll Find While Shore Birding: Terns, Gulls, and long-legged waders.

Upon registration, you will receive a link to log in to the online classroom.

Admission: $25 per person for the entire series
